Highlights of the tour
Kanoni & Anemomylos: Agia Eythimia Church
Embark on a journey to the Agia Eythimia Monastery, one of the oldest monastic sites in Corfu. With its origins dating back to the 15th century, this monastery holds great historical significance. Legend has it that the miraculous icon of Saint Euthimia was discovered within the ruins of an ancient temple on this very spot. Over the centuries, the monastery faced destruction and suffered losses during Turkish incursions and raids. Despite these challenges, it remains a spiritual haven and boasts a rich legacy that spans generations.
Corfu Town: Saint Spiridon Church
Prepare to be captivated by the bustling Agios Spyridon Church, a small yet monumental structure. This cherished place of worship houses the relics of St. Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu. Adorned with intricate icons, frescoes, and ornate silver and gilt decorations, the church boasts the saint’s elaborate coffin.
St. Spyridon, born in Cyprus, was renowned for his miracles before his passing in AD 350. In 1456, his remains were brought to Corfu from Constantinople, leading to the construction of the church that now honors him. The present building, erected in 1590, stands tall with its iconic red-domed bell tower, a symbol of Corfu Town.
Inside, marvel at the upper panels adorned with scenes from the Annunciation, the Last Supper, the Transfiguration, and various religious figures. The exquisite ceiling murals depict moments from the life of St. Spyridon. It is said that Agios Spyridon Church holds the greatest weight of silver among all churches in Greece, with numerous chandeliers, candelabras, and incense burners on display. In a small chapel to the right of the altar, the saint’s remains rest in an elaborate silver casket embellished with delicate enamel medallions.
St. Spyridon is also revered as the patron saint of sailors, offering protection during storms and guiding them to safe harbors. Devotees line up to kiss the coffin and leave heartfelt prayers for assistance. Four times a year, the casket is opened, revealing the mummified face of the saint, preserved under glass. Adorning his feet are embroidered slippers, which are ceremoniously replaced each year as a testament to his nightly walks around the town.
Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, 11th August, and the first Sunday in November mark special occasions when the saint’s open casket is paraded through the town. These processions commemorate the four remarkable instances when St. Spyridon saved the island from disaster: once from famine, twice from the plague, and once from a Turkish invasion.
